2019 Gift Guide: Mama

I love coming up with thoughtful gifts for my mom and mother-in-law because they are both such loving women who do SO much for everyone in our families and who always put other people’s needs above their own. If anyone deserves to be on Santa’s Nice List, it’s moms.

ONE: I love gifting art because it is usually one of those things that would be a splurge for someone and they might not treat themselves to it. If you know the person well, you probably know their home style and can choose a thoughtful, small print for their home. We launched a new series of abstract prints in various color palettes this year, available in both 8 x 10 inches and 11 x 14 inches. Treat your mama to unique print, and maybe add on a date to your local art museum together too!

Available at www.thescribblist.etsy.com ; from $20.

TWO: I have so many fond memories of curling up with a good cookbook with my mama and picking out all of the things we want to try together. The trick is finding a cookbook that is lovely to look through, but also has recipes that you might actually make someday.

A friend of mine introduced me to wonder that is Deb Perelman a few years ago and I have yet to try a recipe of hers that wasn’t amazing. I love that Deb’s recipes are approachable yet still have that little something that makes them feel extra special. She’s got plenty of vegetarian friendly options, and I’ve found that most of the recipes are pretty adaptable if you have food restrictions or allergies like our household. My go to: The Salted Brown Butter Crispie treats. You will likely want to eat the entire pan, and that’s just how it goes sometimes, right?

Available at most places where books are sold including Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Powell’s, list $35.

THREE: We’ve come to find that most of the time all our parents really want is time with us. Whether your mom has a crafty inclination or not, two tickets (so you can go together!) to a creative workshop give you a chance to spend some quality time together while indulging in a fun, new activity. Check out Assembly if you’re local to Portland – you can learn everything from soy candle making to carving your own wooden spoons or choose from their wide selection of DIY jewelry classes. If you’ve always wanted to try hand lettering or calligraphy, I also happen to teach monthly classes there as well!

Visit www.assemblypdx.com to see the full course schedule and purchase tickets; From $45.

FOUR: Gua Sha tools are all the rage right now and for good reason. Based on traditional Chinese Medicine, this 4-in-1 tool is designed to massage your head, scalp, face, and body and stimulate circulation, reduce muscle tension, and promote relaxation. This one by Earth Harbor features 100% pure and responsibly sourced jade. We learned how to use this tool properly thanks to the Organic Bunny – so make sure to send mom over to her site to learn how to properly use it. Regular use helps drain puffiness and toxins and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Plus, it just feels so good!

Available at www.theorganicbunny.com ; $29.

FIVE: One of my favorite gifts to give and receive is a card with a thoughtful note inside. This year, write mom a sweet note and set up a time to get together in person or even via Face Time if she’s long distance. I love this simple, modern and whimsical card by Everglow Handmade.

Available at www.everglowhandmade.com ; from $4.50.

Happy gifting!
